With decentralised AI becoming one of the most closely watched narratives in crypto right now, SingularityNET is attracting fresh attention from investors who want exposure to the AI-crypto intersection beyond simply buying compute tokens.

What SingularityNET actually is

At its core, SingularityNET is a marketplace where AI developers can publish, monetise, and access AI algorithms and services. Think of it as an app store, but for AI agents and models, running on a decentralised network rather than through a single corporate platform. Anyone can list an AI service, and anyone can purchase access to it using AGIX.

The project was founded by Ben Goertzel, a prominent AI researcher perhaps best known for his work on the Sophia robot developed by Hanson Robotics. Goertzel has been a vocal advocate for what he calls "beneficial artificial general intelligence," and SingularityNET was his attempt to build infrastructure that prevents any single company from controlling advanced AI. That philosophical underpinning still shapes the project today.

The platform runs across multiple blockchains, with Ethereum as its original home and Cardano added later as part of a major partnership. Transactions settle on-chain, service listings are stored in a decentralised registry, and the AGIX token facilitates every exchange on the platform.

AGIX is an ERC-20 token (also bridged to the Cardano ecosystem via a dedicated bridge). It serves three main functions within the SingularityNET ecosystem:

  • Payment: Users pay in AGIX to access AI services listed on the marketplace. Developers receive AGIX in return for their services.
  • Governance: AGIX holders can participate in protocol governance, including decisions about platform upgrades, treasury allocation, and new feature development.
  • Staking: The protocol has a staking mechanism that allows AGIX holders to earn rewards while supporting network security and curation of AI services.

The total supply of AGIX is capped, which gives the token a degree of scarcity, though the practical demand for it depends heavily on actual usage of the marketplace rather than speculative interest alone.

SingularityNET is not a standalone project. It is the centrepiece of a broader cluster of interconnected ventures built around Goertzel's AI vision. The most significant of these is the so-called "ASI Alliance," a merger of token ecosystems between SingularityNET, Fetch.ai, and Ocean Protocol. This alliance combined three of the most prominent AI-focused crypto projects into a unified framework, with a joint token called ASI (Artificial Superintelligence Alliance) designed to act as the common currency across all three ecosystems.

For Australian investors already watching what Fetch.ai and its FET token are doing, SingularityNET is closely related and worth understanding in parallel. The two projects share infrastructure goals even though their specific mechanisms differ.

But the structural argument is coherent, and it is one reason the project has attracted serious academic and research interest alongside retail crypto speculation. That is a plausible thesis, but it is not a certainty, and the timeline is long.
